Oregon – Onsite Host Volunteer at a BLM Seed Orchard Farm
Summary: An Onsite Host volunteer position will be available November 2024 at the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Travis Tyrrell Tree Seed Orchard (TSO) in Lorane, Oregon. The Onsite Host position can be either an individual or married couple, w/no children living with them. A married couple will be considered one position but both persons will be held to the Requirements*.
Responsibilities
The Onsite Host will live in their own trailer in the site provided for up to a 3-year period if TSO approves. The purpose of the Onsite Host is to be a presence to provide the appearance of added security and to assist TSO’s 3-person staff with maintenance of the grounds, trail, compound, buildings, equipment, and orchards. We are looking for an Onsite Host who will enjoy these tasks and take initiative to do tasks after discussing ideas with assigned supervisor.
Location Description: TSO is 832.5 acres most of which are Douglas-fir orchards and consists of a small compound containing 2 small office buildings, 1 shop/warehouse, and 3 cone storage buildings. Behind the compound is a gravel pad with RV carport for the Onsite Host to park their trailer/RV. TSO is approximately 30 miles SW of Eugene. Responsibilities: The Onsite Host maintains a presence during weekends, TSO’s off-business hours, and holidays and a list of miscellaneous duties. In addition, the Onsite Host assists TSO staff three days/workweek with a variety of tasks, with two weekdays off. (Contact staff if there is a need to be away for an occasion.) Tasks include maintaining a neat and tidy appearance of the office grounds, 0.75-mile Forest Succession trail (1.5 mile round-trip), compound, buildings, and equipment. Tasks could also include assisting staff with projects in the tree orchards. The Onsite Host shall be capable of and participate in physically active tasks that may last for up to several hours at a time and shall be flexible and able to adapt to changing directions, weather, and needs of the BLM. The volunteer needs to be able and willing to walk on rough terrain/slopes/uneven ground.
If the Onsite Host demonstrates knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain forklift, tractors and their implements, TSO will potentially request assistance with tasks utilizing those skills.
*Requirements for each volunteer person: keep the host site neat, orderly, and looking nice; have a valid driver’s license and good driving record; pass the BLM security screening (background check); and stay current with BLM trainings such as Driving 4X4s.
The BLM provides the Onsite Host with the following accommodations during the agreement:
-A gravel pad under RV-carport for parking, full hookups, and a garden area.
-Utilities: propane, electricity (auto-generator turns on if a power outage), water (potable but not palatable), septic, washer and dryer in the BLM building, landline with local-call service if desired, and WiFi.
-There is a $12/day Onsite Host reimbursement given monthly via direct deposit. The reimbursement is calculated on how many days you are onsite providing a presence. One reimbursement-day will be subtracted for each full 24-hour period you have no onsite presence. Volunteers do not acquire reimbursed vacation or sick days.
